NEDA Week: February 21-27

This week (February 21-27) is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. This is a week that hits very close to home for a lot of people, and especially for us here at Nutrition 502. As Dietitians, we are constantly seeing the effects eating disorders have not only on our clients themselves, but on their friends and families as well. However, as dietitians we also have seen the power in the healing that recovery offers those who choose it.

But why have a week entirely dedicated towards eating disorder awareness? According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) over 28 million Americans will experience an eating disorder at some point in their life. Furthermore, NEDA also has reported a 10.7% increase in calls to their hotline since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Now more than ever it is important for people to know that resources are available for those struggling with disordered eating, and recovery is possible for those who reach out and try to find it.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, don’t be afraid to #BeTheChange. If you’re not sure how to know if you have a problem, ask yourself if you are experiencing some of these common warning signs:

  • Mental consumption with food (past or present) making it difficult to focus on the moment

  • Rules around food that specify what you are able to eat and when

  • Frequent dieting

  • Avoidance of social situations due to food or exercise

  • Skipping meals

  • Binge eating

  • Generalized anxiety

Click here for an extensive list of signs and symptoms.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out and get the help you need. Far too often people think that they have to be at a certain weight or have certain behaviors in order to deserve help. This could not be farther from the truth. Eating disorders do not discriminate based on gender, ethnicity, age, size, weight, or life stage. No matter who you are or what your life looks like, disordered eating  is something to be taken seriously. You never have to be “sick enough” to validate reaching out for help. Everyone deserves to be able to live freely in their bodies and feel the freedom to enjoy all foods.

If you are looking for somewhere to start, we would love to be a part of helping you begin your journey towards recovery. Feel free to email us at Natalie@Nutrition502.com or go to our website to schedule a FREE discovery phone call today. You can also go to the NEDA Website to use their 24 hour hotline or view their list of resources as well. If you are struggling then all that matters is that you get started towards recovery today. Recovery from disordered eating is worth it and starts with one step.
